Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.

Wouldn't 'not wanting to give a penalty away' be a good reason?

Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
If you intend to stop a goal scoring opportunity with foul play then you should be sent off every time regardless of whether a penalty is given or not. If this wasn't the rule, then there is no reason for players not to commit professional fouls in the box.

He wouldn't be spouting off if Newcastle had gained a deserved point from the game.

Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
It should be down to the referee's judgment on intent. If the defending player is the last man and intends to unfairly stop the attacking player, then a red. Otherwise, no card, a yellow one or a red one, depending on the severity of the foul itself.

Of course intent can be hidden, but sometimes you have to go with the least bad option.

Watched the replay. Yes, it was harsh, especially the red card. It started as a shoulder to shoulder challenge, but with the follow through the elbow came out from the side of the body pushing the striker away in the process.

You can surely give that penalty if you are very strict, but no way it was a red card.

I thought shoulder to shoulder was allowed in football.

Shouldn't have even been a penalty.

He could try not fouling

Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.

Worst idea ever.

The penalty is punishment enough unless it stops a certain goal (ie handball on the line). In most cases the penalty is a much better chance than the 1-on-1 would've been anyway.

As it stands the defender is getting penalised three times (penalty, red card, suspension) for one offence.

Now I've read some dumb shit on here but that takes the biscuit.

Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
You want referees to give goals when a goal hasn't actually been scored?

Sven Roeder 6:36 Mon Oct 26
Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
I said yesterday that if the ref decides it is denying a clear goalscoring opportunity in the area he should award a goal like a penalty try in rugby as well as a yellow card.
If it's a tackle that would be a red elsewhere on the pitch it should obviously be a red as well here along with the awarded goal.

I am of a view that sending players off should be a last resort and avoided if possible.
That said if they are just boneheaded like Nemanja Spastic of Chelsea I have no sympathy.

Percy, a lot of that shit is six of one and half a dozen of the other

Every time there's a corner there's an incident where if the referee was brave enough he'd give a penalty.

Refs also need to stop being useless.

He's spot on.

The fat cunt.

wrighty 6:27 Mon Oct 26
Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
Not sure anything needs changing, these are top players and they know what they're doing. The penalty is because the foul is in the area and the red is for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Not wholly convinced yesterday was and obvious opportunity as arguably the keeper could have got there before fletcher.

If it becomes a yellow then you'll get more Paul Allen type cynical challenges. Players also know how to make it look unintentional.

The rule is fine as it is, players just need to stop being fucking useless.

Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
wasnt a red as wasnt the denying of a goalscoring opportunity. keeper would have reached the ball first.

it was a pen and not even a yellow

Trevor B 6:21 Mon Oct 26
Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
It depends, if it's a pen like the one that Jenks gave away then just a yellow, but if a player blatantly and cynically takes another out to deny a chance of scoring then i think that's a red. Some seem to argue that the pen is punishment enough, but sometimes it isn't and some players will take happily take a yellow in the knowledge that their keeper may save the pen. tbf some happily take the red, a la suarez.

Far Cough 6:17 Mon Oct 26
Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
If it's worthy of a pen then at least it's worthy of a yellow card, I don't like this "last man" bollocks, yellow for me

DaillyShaggedMyWife 6:17 Mon Oct 26
Re: Allardyce speaks sense at last.
I haven't got any sympathy with Coloccini. He made no attempt to play the ball, and played the man in the box. If you don't want to be sent off for fouling when the last man, don't foul people when you are the last man.
